Adjectives: Position & Agreement

French adjectives change form to match the noun, and usually come after it, not before.

French adjectives do two things English adjectives never do: they agree with the noun they describe (changing form for gender and number), and most of the time they go after the noun instead of before it.

1. Agreement: matching gender and number

In writing, the regular pattern is: add -e for the feminine, add -s for the plural (-es for feminine plural).

un sac verta green bag (masc. sing.)
une robe vertea green dress (fem. sing.)
des sacs vertsgreen bags (masc. pl.)
des robes vertesgreen dresses (fem. pl.)
Two shortcuts: an adjective already ending in -e in the masculine doesn't change for the feminine (un homme jeune / une femme jeune). And one already ending in -s or -x doesn't change in the masculine plural (un prix bas → des prix bas).

2. Irregular feminine forms

Some common adjectives don't just add -e; the ending changes in a predictable but irregular way.

beau → bellebeautiful, handsome
nouveau → nouvellenew
vieux → vieilleold
blanc → blanchewhite
long → longuelong
bon → bonnegood
gentil → gentillenice, kind

3. Position: most adjectives go after the noun

une voiture rougea red car
un film intéressantan interesting movie
un pays magnifiquea magnificent country

4. But some short, common adjectives go before the noun

A small group of everyday adjectives, mostly about beauty, age, goodness, and size, come before the noun instead.

grand / petitbig/tall / small
jeune / vieuxyoung / old
beau / jolibeautiful / pretty
bon / mauvaisgood / bad
nouveaunew
gros / longbig/fat / long
même / autresame / other
premierfirst
Before a vowel sound: beau, nouveau, and vieux get a special masculine singular form when the next word starts with a vowel sound: bel, nouvel, vieil. un bel homme, un nouvel ami, un vieil ami.

5. Watch out: a few adjectives change meaning with position

un grand hommea great man
un homme granda tall man
un ancien professeura former teacher
un bâtiment ancienan old/ancient building
ma propre chambremy own room
une chambre proprea clean room
ce pauvre hommethis poor (unfortunate) man
un homme pauvrea poor (penniless) man

Exercise 1. Make the adjective agree

Rewrite the adjective in parentheses so it agrees with the noun.

Noun + adjectiveCorrect form
une maison ___ (grand)
des voitures ___ (petit)
un homme ___ (jeune)
une fille ___ (heureux)
des hommes ___ (heureux)
une robe ___ (blanc)

Exercise 2. Quiz time!

Complete each sentence with the correctly formed adjective, in the right place.

1. C'est une voiture. (beau)

It's a beautiful car.

2. J'ai un appartement. (nouveau)

I have a new apartment.
